Prof. Wayne F. Yakes, MD, FSIR, FCIRSE

Wayne F. Yakes, M.D. grew up in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Yakes served in the U.S. Army for 11 years and was honorably discharged in 1991. During this time, he attended Rice University completing a double major in Biology and Psychology.  He then attended Creighton University School of Medicine, graduated in 1979, underwent his Internship and Radiology Residency at Fitszimons Army Medical Center in Colorado (1979-1983) and was board certified in Radiology in 1983.   He underwent subspecialty training in Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology and has Certificates of Added Qualifications in Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology.

As a Fellow at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. (1984-85), he developed an interest in the management of congenital vascular malformations.  After researching the literature, he discovered there was a lack of beneficial treatment options for the management of congenital vascular malformations.  He proceeded to develop a new definitive approach for treating vascular malformations by endovascular transcatheter approaches.  He was the first to pioneer and publish this ethanol AVM embolization technique in the world’s literature in 1986. Since that time, Dr. Yakes has authored numerous medical articles and textbook chapters further advancing the subject as well to lecturing and treating patients with vascular malformations on every continent.

Dr. Yakes has now created and authored the “Yakes AVM Classification System” that directs specific endovascular techniques to cure AVMs with specific angioarchitectures and that also lowers the complication rates of treatment in these complex, challenging vascular pathologies.

Dr. Yakes is Past President of ISSVA (1986-88) and is the first Interventional/Neurointerventional Radiologist to serve as President because of his pioneering curative endovascular techniques. Dr. Yakes was also conferred the highest award that Creighton University School of Medicine can bestow upon a prior graduate, The Alumni Merit Award in 2001.

Dr. Yakes established the Yakes Vascular Malformation Center at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado in 1991 to be solely dedicated to the diagnosis and management of vascular anomalies in all anatomic locations.   Dr. Yakes is referred patients from countries all over the world as the cure rates and outcomes he has achieved are not equaled at any other center worldwide.
